Outside The Convent Walls
Broadcast as part of the Heart and Soul slot.
Outside The Convent Walls, broadcast on BBC World Service, tells the story of Marion Dante, who joined a convent aged 14 as a “sin offering” for her mother, who had become pregnant outside marriage.
Marion spent over 30 years as a nun. She grew up cut off from the outside world; spent the sixties unaware of The Beatles; and didn’t know who JFK was until she was told of his assassination.
Ritula Shah talks to Marion about her faith, and the spiritual crisis that led her to leave the Order.
Producer: Henrietta Harrison
