Songbird: The Eva Cassidy Story
Broadcast in December 2008 across the Smooth Radio Network.
Eva Marie Cassidy was a US singer of jazz, blues, folk, gospel, country and pop classics. She was virtually unknown outside her native Washington, DC when she died of melanoma in 1996. Four years later her music suddenly caught the UK’s attention and her compilation album Songbird, climbed to the top of the UK Album Charts, almost three years after its initial release.
This programme, broadcast for GMG on Smooth and Real Radio, was a unique insight into a performer who has posthumously sold around eight million records worldwide, including three UK number ones. It featured a rare and moving contribution from Eva’s mother and father, praise from fans Kiki Dee and Katie Melua, and the thoughts of her musical collaborator and best friend Chris Biondo:
